paul_jewell_cpdd_2012During his 33 year professional career, Paul Jewell has dedicated himself to supporting education through the relevant application of instructional technology.

In the 1980’s, while working with the San Diego Unified School District, Paul applied his knowledge of television production, helping teachers use video as an instructional tool to enhance their high school curriculum.  As a result, some of the district’s programs extended their reach far beyond the classroom through a series of nationally and internationally distributed interactive satellite teleconferences.

Building on this success, Paul dived into distance learning in Alaska.  During his three years in Point Barrow, he was integral in the creation of a video-based distance learning network, connecting nine remote Arctic village schools across the 88,000 square mile North Slope Borough School District.

For the past 19 years, Paul has been applying this same pioneering mindset to advancing online learning at Iowa State University.  Starting in 1993 with two video-based engineering degree programs, Engineering-LAS Online Learning now offers over 300 courses annually across 13 graduate degree programs and 15 graduate certificate programs accessible to working technical professionals around the globe.

Paul Jewell earned his Bachelor’s degree in Radio/Television production from the University of Northern Iowa.  In 1988 Paul was inducted as a Fellow of the Christa McAuliffe Institute for Educational Pioneering.  He has been active in ASEE’s Continuing Professional Development Division since 2003.
